Title: New Computer
Post by: jlsarnicola on August 28, 2017, 09:13:25 PM
i have been working on my Classic I7 3770 for a few years and been thinking of upgrading. My current computer is ok for most programs and games however it is almost 4 years old and getting a little long in the tooth. My question is i hear the AMD Ryzen and threadripper lines are giving Intel a run for their money . Any suggestions about which is overall better for Terragen at least. it seems game wise Intel still wins by a small amount but ive heard AMD wins with productivity and rendering by a much larger amount. Any recomendations are appreciated as im looking to decrease render times without using a render farm.

Current pc is
i7-3770
16 gigs ram
SSD
gtx 980ti

Both Ryzen and Threadripper should be excellent for Terragen. For price/performance ratio there is no better option, and Threadripper in particular is incredibly good at rendering tasks due to many threads and reasonably high base clock. If you can afford a $1000 CPU, you'll be way better off for Terragen and most rendering with Threadripper vs. equivalent $1000 Intel CPU. Not to mention that Threadripper motherboards are cheaper as well. Total system cost should be well below Intel, with equivalent or better performance. AMD has finally brought us back another Athlon situation. :D

I'm the market for a new machine and debating whether to go Intel or Amd, would be interested to hear from users who may have the new Threadrippers.

Yet the homepage purports that 4GB and Dual Core is minimum. ::) Figures.
