Yup, more than curious myself as 1 & 2 had multiple entries and I'm sure if I went thru the winners they all do.

I also scraped into the list as one off the also ran  ;), There was a general newsletter announcement "Terragen 4 Open Beta + VR Challenge Winners", was this the mail you are referring to? or was there a separate winners only mail?

Congratulations to everyone this can't have been an easy contest to judge.

Great! really looking forward to see how this is displayed/presented and the top 10 entries.

I saw one thumbnail image of Ulco's listed in (i think it was) the top ten, looked like it used erosion. Could not find an expanded view of it though. And I saw one other image of a science fiction scene that may or may not have been part of the contest, but was a TG VR image i guess. Pretty cool image either way though.

Time marches on.

There's an erosion image of mine in the mail and web page, but that's not an entry. Didn't use erosion in my entries. But I am very curious which of the 4 I sent in was chosen.

The email is being bounced (repeatedly) as spam! :( I guess these "you have won a prize, congratulations!" messages are a little risky. ;) We'll try to modify the message, but if you have an alternate email or can whitelist @planetside.co.uk email addresses, that would be great.

Hi Oshyan,
this is strange, since I don't have a spam filter activated that I'm aware of.
Maybe you can try the same address with @t-online.de at the end?!

Yeah, it was a lot at once, unfortunately. Sorry for the delays guys. We'll get back to the contest house keeping when we get back from SIGGRAPH next week. First will be a gallery of simple 2D versions of the winning scenes (single perspective). After that we will do cooler things. ;)

Well, if you're interested in computer graphics on a technical (or artistic) level, it's a pretty amazing experience. The amount of knowledge being shared openly in panels, courses, and the like is incredible. The camaraderie and idea exchange of "Birds of a Feather" (sort of "user group) sessions is fantastic. And you can see (and often experience) demos of some of the newest, often previously unseen technology and concepts. In recent years the VR stuff in particular has been a big presence at the show, and you can get hands-on with a lot of cool and unique VR experiences and projects. It's a great time for those interested in this industry.

The unfortunate reality is that it became a "perfect storm" with the timing of TG4 finalization and the challenge results. We've got the majority of other prizes going out to winners already, but the rendering is proving challenging on some scenes. We will share results as soon as we can, that's the best we can say for now. We appreciate your patience!

Actually we're working on it all simultaneously, along with SIGGRAPH. So yes, some distraction from it to be honest. ;) But I have one rendering on my box at home and one at Pixel Plow. The thing is, to render these at the detail and resolution we want, it's just taking a long time (not to mention some tweaks, adjustments, and minor improvements we wanted to make). The Pixel Plow job is currently at some 10s of hours (on a single machine though). Anyway, it's in-progress, and we want to get it to you as soon as possible, truly. It's a top priority after return from SIGGRAPH.

Just a thought, maybe I do not understand something but... why can't creators post their work / renders by themselves...? I don't really understand why you are complaining, instead of just ask them? ???
Title: Re: Contest winners
Post by: Dune on January 04, 2018, 03:52:31 AM
They/we can, but we are not really complaining, just teasing  ;) Hoping this will entice Matt or Oshyan to give it some attention again. I very much realize it's a hell of a job to get the magic done they wanted, and at the same time work to improve this amazing software. So it's not to be taken too seriously (as far as I'm concerned).
Title: Re: Contest winners
Post by: N-drju on January 04, 2018, 04:03:08 AM
Oh, okay then. Well, guess it would indeed look nice and professional if this was made into an official "hall of fame" kind of stuff.
Title: Re: Contest winners
Post by: zaxxon on January 04, 2018, 10:49:17 AM
While we who entered can understand the workload and the creative energies required from the limited Planetside Staff (Matt and Oshyan only?), and while even more so we can appreciate the wonderful software that Terragen has become, it still is very disappointing to have spent so much of our time and creativity with full expectations of Planetside fulfilling it's promise to present these winning images in a high-res VR format.  Those of us who won prizes received those as promised and I for one appreciated the prompt fulfillment. The promised 3D Magazine article with interviews and published images was less than successful, but probably beyond Planetside's  control. So N-drju I really don't think anyone is complaining, indeed as Dune suggested there is a certain amount of humour  involved in remarking on the course this Contest has followed, especially on the start of another new contest.  I would still love to see the winning entries in full, high-res VR. My entry took 101 hours to render on an i7 with 48 gigs of RAM, and it was less than half the proposed res of what PS was going to provide via a large renderfarm. This has to be a 'sensitive' issue given the time that has elapsed, and Oshyan's last update was July, 2017. Speaking for myself, I would appreciate a current update and perhaps a little insight as to what occurred along the way.  :)

Well Doug, you hit nail right on head with referencing the heavy nature of your scene. It's been a bear to work with. :D But yours isn't the only one. And since we started out with fairly lofty ambitions (8k stereo spherical, including render elements), well, it took a while to realize and then come to terms with having to downgrade that a good bit. I'm currently working on rendering out 6k non-stereo without render elements, and many scenes are still taking a helluva time, but they're finishing. So we'll have something out for you guys, just not as mind blowing as we'd hoped. But likely higher rez than any of you would have been able to do on your own given the nature of these scenes. We of course deeply regret the delay. After a while one doesn't really know what to say, it seems crazy it's taken so long, but here we are. *sigh*

Thanks for the update Oshyan, it's much appreciated.  I'll look forward to seeing all of the images at some future date, and thanks for all the extra work this must have generated!

Yes, thank you Oshyan, and thanks for bearing with our humour (we need more of it anyway). I would have guessed it's so much more work than anticipated, and am looking forward to the finals.

My scene was unoptimised so much you can think about it.
Choosing a viewpoint and making a test render was really hard.
On my machine at least. Good to know that other scenes were heavy too :)

So yeah it is mostly humour from my aspect here too as i got the new Terragen version really fast anyway.

Thanks for the understanding and support guys. Hopefully the "real" prize of Terragen versions was enough for the time being. ;)

It is. If I look back a few years, there's a tremendous improvement and richness in features. Hat off for you guys!

Indeed thanks a lot to you, Matt and Oshyan!! And yes, we're teasing!
If it's true, that Planetside is more or less the two of you, and I can say that I met with 50% of the whole Planetside crew face to face, which makes a total of one, I'd say, no, we're not complaining! ;D ;D ;D

My hats (all of them) off to you as well!

The promised 3D Magazine article with interviews and published images was less than successful, but probably beyond Planetside's control

This certainly was out of Planetside's hands. This like a few other prizes were arranged by me, unfortunately I didn't learn my lesson with 3DAD when he didn't meet his end of the agreed coverage for Iceland. Not sure if you guys even remember those quickie Q&As. Not what we agreed on that's for sure. It doesn't look good for his business that's for sure, I am sure we are not the only group they missed deliverables. Too Bad

Thanks for that insight Danny. Also, a big thank you for getting a great lineup of prizes (again)!

Clarify - The bulk of the prizes were all Planetside, I only wrangled 3dad and Quadspinner.

May I humbly ask, if there is something new to show? It's been two and a half years now, and I'd truly love to see, what all the contestants created. It doesn't have to be in ultra high resolution.

Thanks Danny, but of course we both use Wordpress and we have the same plugin you do. The problem now is that it doesn't support 8k, so we are having to look at other solutions. Most likely what we'll have to do is just put up 4k versions for now and get 8k versions out there if it becomes easier to do. As it is it's quite time consuming as each one has to be separately created in a stand-alone viewer with its own page.

Now that 4.3 is out I'll be able to put attention back on this and finish it off.

Good to hear that. Thanks Oshyan. Btw. what plugin are you using? Maybe something for my own site as well.

I remember this being talked about at an open conference a few years ago, and how it was a field for revenue generation. That said, it seems to be the applied approach, where anything supporting 8k is licensed based.

However, the plugin you are using is customizable... And looking through the base code, the actual viewer handles 8k, at least, there is nothing suggesting it can't so it must be the plugins version it uses or viewport limitations in development of the plugin.

Thanks Oshyan,
In time I had completely forgotten to follow this subject. Very happy to know that there has always been followers and interest.

The winning entries have, at last, been posted to Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/pg/PlanetsideSoftware/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2034916586576876

We had hoped to find a better (higher quality, non-proprietary) solution, but for now that has proved quite challenging. So for the moment the galleries are only on Facebook. We hope to add them to our website in time. When we are able to do that we will update the main gallery posting thread here: https://planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,26157.0.html

Looks good, some very intriguing entries I didn't see before (or I must have forgotten). And the sharpness is amazing. When will the renders be sent to the respective winners? Soon, I hope! I would certainly like to show them to potential clients in my own offline viewer (some of them coming over next week already).
