As the title says, but then in B&W, for a change. I had some trouble with too much light in the eyes due to reflection, taken care of now.
Nice one Ulco.
The lighting looks kinda extreme. For that kind of day light doesn't the shadow parts do look too much dark? Deliberate?
Semi in agreement w/Kadri but over all I like the B&W reprise of this image.
This must have been way back in the days before the invention of technocolor.

Best render of Sea Horses I've seen for a while.

well, grass-sea horses anyway heh heh
I was playing a bit with color sliders when converting to B&W. It's not perfect, I know. Color version is better.
Very nice anyway...
Could we get another shot with a horses closeup? Please!
How do you get hair in TG, just add grass patches to head? Black and white is good, but try sepia tone.
Your skill with the human model has really developed: excellent work! DAZ and ZBrush?
Indeed, DAZ, Poseray (to combine 25 materials into 6 or so, and throw unused stuff out), LW (to move the UV map of the cornea to replace pupil and iris), ZBrush to add clothing and hair (fibermesh), and sometimes modify face or so, finally Poseray again to combine all.
I like the B/W version. Quite moody.
Well done, looks great :)

Quite the process but I'm missing at least 1/2 the software and all the skill

Yes? :)
Cool scene, like it a lot.
Made another Neanderguy. I might do some footsteps in the circled areas. No water layer, btw. ;)
Looks good Ulco.
Did you use the same terrain as water? If so i can't see any difference. It looks great.
Was it just a test or does it help in any way for your workflow or render time?

I think the water is just a nicely textures terrain as well Kadri...great trick Ulco
Very nice. Kid looks great. Might add a little stepping muscles in ZBrush though :)
Muscle is a good idea. And yes, it's all one terrain, all masked by simple shapes and fractals. Plus is that you don't get a sharp distinction between water and (wet) sand. In reality, there's some adhesion between sand grains and liquid, and on small scale renders, I always miss that.
I made one mistake, having the RT reflectivity creep into the sand grains too much, so these parts took forever to render. I changed that now, reducing lower half from a 1hour render to 10mins.

...
That makes sense. Thanks Ulco.
So, are you changing y altitude on your SSSs by small measure to get this layering effect? I agree about the shininess of the transitional wet sand. That area needs some break in the smoothness.
Wonderful image!
Indeed. Can get a bit more complicated if adding more details, such as the foam patches or (newly added in next iteration) ripple-mix on the wet sand area, especially when the ripples need to be masked out from under the foam patches and footsteps (just added as well) again. Hence the multiply and add nodes ;)
Surf also has a breaking end, which is not very well visible from here.
Just watching, in a state of awe, as this develops......
Well, it's rendering now, but quite slow, due to RT reflections. Impatient as I am, I still prefer things without water or RT reflections :P

Beauty often comes with a steep price eh....
He looks as if he is ice skating more than running. I look forward to next render
Actually he was the one and only Neanderthal to have invented skating ;)
Great improvements!
Though you will get trouble with adding more details -- sorry you were one of the teachers where I learned the view for such details... ;)
Two little things:
For a realistic impression of the movement you will need some water splashes around the foot in the sand and some droplets slashing from the foot in the air.
The sand looks good but the sand particles seem to be a bit big... mixed with bigger particles (fakestones) or alternatively finer particles could look interesting.
... but both points really nitpicking ... :)
Agree with Doc Charley comments about water, but overall beautifully done. Especially like the way your image handles human (or nearly human) form. Much better than I'm usually able to muster.
Was wondering though, what's with the pixelated area over the log?

He's an elf. He makes no sound, no splashes, no nothing. :P
But seriously now, I'd also like to know how to make such splashes. It is perhaps easier to fake on a deeper water because then it looks, sort of, as if it was boiling.
As far as the sand is concerned I wouldn't complain that much. Remember that there are various coastlines with multitude of sand grains. In Thailand or Caribbean you get white sand, so thin you can't even feel the separate grains. In other part of the world, you can find a coarse, rough sand that is one step short of being pebbles!
Agree w/Nils and was gonna post the same things,,,nice work on the leg muscles.
Thanks guys. The pixelated area is to discourage theft 8) ;) though it's easy to adjust of course, and perhaps not worth stealing.
I kind of agree about the sand and splashes. Both are possible, the splashes perhaps by local vdisp or an additional droplets object. Problem with the vdisp is that the reflective area isn't transparent, so vdisped uprisings wouldn't be transparent. There's always a way of course, so a small transparent plane would do. But it's too much work (especially the rendering; 7 hours), so I won't do it :P Easier to do some postwork.
Agree, for a fiddly detail like that post is the way to go and even though I generally avoid post I'd do it in that situation as well.
This looks really fantastic! But since I'm a passionate nitpicker as well, I think Nils is right. The lack of splashes was the first thing, that came into my mind.
And this is really a tough one. I could imagine using small localised clouds with low quality settings, but I don't think, this would really look convincing.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think I remember some water splash meshes somewhere, but I'm not sure.
Sorry, I just found out, that I wrote before reading the posts on page 3... :-[
Yeah, read and think before you write ;) I might have a go after all, if time permits. Always in for a challenge. A combination of uprising (VDisp) splash from wet sand and loose droplets, perhaps just popped onto a small object around the foot (I'll make some). A croprender will do I guess.
;D ;D ;D

Impressive work as ever, Dune!
So they were out of the tribal camp to get some food, with their warhammer and bludgeon - as good Neanderthal custom goes. Even some mammoth were sighted, but they'd be too big for just father and son. They came to a small lake. Father was a bit annoyed as his son kept playing with his new toy. They'd never spot some unaware reindeer like this....
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
My dear Ulco - I'm slowly getting worried about you! You seem to have too much contact to persons like me... Your humor develops into a strange direction... like mine... ;D ;D ;D
But anyway great render!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Cool idea, and I like the guy's facial expression. The ground looks terrific! The mix of dry soil and partially dried grass is very natural.
Hilarious. Nice detail everywhere, even his dried muddy feet.
The grassy vegetation is superb, lots of very subtle work in this image!
Awesome and that guys expression is worth 1000000 words...Nils is right, you've been over exposed heh heh heh
:)
Looks good.
Still bothered by his son's toy plane, father led the way across a vast dried riverbed near the mountains, and finally Henderson spotted some reindeer...
As a sidenote: I am trying to get these clothes a bit nicer, and saw in some Far Cry stills that they wore the skins inside out. Nice idea. I don't know how scientifically accurate that is, though.
A really good work on the cloth ad the skin!

well the stitched together leather is first rate for sure, like the hairy hide as well.....
The fur and hair are just spot on!
I liked your initial black and white treatment. It reminds me of Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, a quite extraordinary piece of cinema.
I always think of you as the guy that's incredibly good at flat marshes and sea. The details...
Thanks. Then here's another B&W version. They didn't have color film back then anyway ;)
Nice :)
Cosmic, even in B&W.

Wow thats nice!
Funny thing... the berea aurealis makes the picture looking like a VR picture on first sight :)
Well, it is a VR image. Watch it in some app. I have to work on the ice though, it's only a wip.
Oh! I'll have to try on the PS4! must look marvellous!
8) 8) 8)!
wishing I had a PS4
