I'm new to Terragen so I hope this question doesn't annoy everyone.
How would I go about making a tree covered terrain? Specifically, a terrain covered in leafy trees, not evergreens. I have used the software for a couple of hours and come up with some cool scenes but I still have no clue what I'm doing.
Hi speedychef, welcome to the forum.
In order to make a tree covered terrain, you must create a population of objects. Object -> Add Object -> Population. And then select the file for the tree you wish to reproduce in said population. This will create many instances of the 3D object. All of this, of course, assumes you have a leafy 3D tree ready at hand. If you do not have a 3D tree in mind, Xfrog supplies a few samples at their site here: http://xfrog.com/category/samples.htm (http://xfrog.com/category/samples.htm)
Thanks for the help. It worked. :)
Is it possible to clear out some of the terrain, so that not all of it is tree covered?
You can mask the tree population by whatever suits; a power fractal for random distribution, a distribution shader for altitudes or slopes, painted shader or alien-made maps, simple shapes.....
You can also invert the masking, lots of possibilities.
