Title: Hurricane Harvey
Post by: PabloMack on September 04, 2017, 09:50:36 AM
I don't know if any of you remember or not but I live in Houston, Texas,
the city that got the worst of the flooding from Hurricane Harvey.
We got through it with minimal damage but others we know were
not so lucky. Actually, we watched it all unfold from our hotel rooms
in Alberta, Canada. We had left our home town for Calgary on the
20th of August. Our first activity was a 2-day field trip to visit
Dinosaur Provincial Park and the Drumheller area to visit late
Cretaceous deposits that were laid down during the Campanian Stage.
From Wednesday to Saturday were the meetings and we were
supposed to fly home on Sunday the 27th. But airports were
closed and Madeline's work was closed for the next week so we
decided to see more of Canada and rented a car. This part of
Canada is very similar to the Denver area where I grew up.
Weather was good the whole time but views were not great do
to a haze resulting from the smoke coming from all the fires in
BC. On one particular late afternoon the sun was masked by
a cloud that was yellow-orange and not gray as one would
expect. Our base of operation was in Canmore, a tourist town
south of Banff. We drove to Banff and Lake Louise but those
were so crowded we just turned around and drove back. Later
I talked to a tourist on the plane back who drove on to Jasper
and he said that his experience was pretty solitary.
After getting back home we viewed some of our security camera
video. One or more pickup trucks had gouged deep ruts into
our lawn. Presumably their drivers had more confidence than
they should have (Houston has more than its share of red necks)
and they had to abort their plans to cross a bridge that was
probably under water. I'm sure they could not even tell where
the road was so they ended up on our lawn. I'll post a picture
or two when I get around to it. I hope everyone else is doing
well.

Good to hear all is relatively well at your place. It is a huge catastrophe and a prequel to what's about to be unleashed upon humanity.
Btw. my wife and I visited Lake Louise as well quite a few years ago, and we were the only ones there. Awesome place. We slept in the car, and next morning we were snowed over and there was a raven sitting on a picknick table watching us.

Awesome that you come to my city as a vacation.  When I travel and tell people where I'm from, they say they've never heard of it.  I think that we're probably Canada's best kept secret.  Too bad about the smoke, though.  Most summers here are not so bad as this.  We had it bad about 2 or 3 years ago, too.  This year is worse.  I took a pic on Sunday night to see how bad it was here.

So you say this is a chemical haze Upon Infinity? Not just moisture? Wow...

The truth is that violent hurricanes and air pollution are connected to each other. Methane in particular has a strong potential of causing violent stroms and facilitates creation of the so-called "super-clusters". Not a fun thing to be around. :P

From where I am, it was smoke coming from B.C and Washington wildfires.  It's all cleared up now here.

It is not a "chemical haze" in the sense of being the product of man's activities. It is from all of the forest fires in the West as I talked about in my first post.
