Title: So, who is participating?
Post by: FrankB on March 01, 2013, 11:58:15 AM
Hey guys,

in the survey we had 30 people stating they are going to participate.
So who are you?

WIP threads are not mandatory, so it's hard to get an impression on who is "IN" !

Cheers,
Frank

I've started one of mine  - I'm going to try and work on two, time permitting. Will put up my start tomorrow.  To make it harder for myself I'm going to try and ignore Frank and Dune's work and reinvent the wheel.  Hah! I've failed already, just used Dune's dotted center white line! :-\

Well don't worry guys. I have created my thread already and I'm at the same stage as you ;)

Good to know you're all on it!
Looking forward to see your WIP's :)

I'm in. My WIP is progressing; now at the veggie population stage - then, much tweaking. Will play more with the atmo. I have indications the render time will be a blockbuster.

I'm in (obviously!) Glad to see some more coming on board.
It was starting to feel a little lonely out there with only three other posters:)
Don't forget to post a WIP thread (i know it's not a requirement)

Newbie as much as I am, I'm going to take a stab at this once I'm done with my day job responsibilities that end end of next week.

We need as many contestants as possible! So come on, if anyone still doubts (beginners also!)... grab you chance, you'll never know if you hit the right button and take home those prizes.

QuoteDon't forget to post a WIP thread (i know it's not a requirement)
I think it should be a requirement next time. It would be nice for contestants to see what they're up against, thus pushing each other up.

At least if you post and have any question, there are users willing to give advice, and other eyes will see more (mistakes), and thus heighten your chances to win.

Hi Frank,

I have a question. Now working with my image for the NWDA contest and are at the vegetation/population stage. I am using your Road/Tarmac file and wanted to connect my plant pops to the Road mask such that the plants will not appear on the road (I'd rather use this method instead of using the painted shader).

In one of Andy Welder's dirt road files he has an image map shader (hand drawn) where one can attach their plant pops (populator changes when you do this).

In your file, where would I connect the plant pops to achieve the same effect.
Would appreciate hearing from you on this. Thanks,

Bob

You should be able to use the mask for the tarmac, but inverted. At least that's how it works in my setup. You can also make a second 'road' simple shape, maybe a bit wider or softer, and use that (taken through a similar warp shader) with a color adjust, if you want your plants a bit off the road, or maybe growing just on the tarmac. Plenty possibilities.

Thanks Ulco. In Frank's setup, the Road Mask just consists of blue nodes; whereas, in Andy's setup, he uses and image map where one can easily attach the plant pops. I'm trying to figure out where I should attach the plant pops in Frank's setup.

I have mixed feeling about the idea of in future contests requiring contestants to post wips.  I can see how it could easily motivate people to up their game when they see what they're up against, but it could also just as easily discourage some from participating if they see works in progress posted that are clearly above their skill levels, at which point they might just figure "why bother".

Anyway, just a thought.

There should be some red shader named "soft outside road" mask or similar. Use this one!

Yes, that is the reason why we don't require it. Some people just don''t feel comfortable sharing at an early stage, fearing that they can't hold up with the standards posted by others, so we don't force it.
However, we keep encouraging folks to do exactly that, which they may feel a little insecure with in the beginning. In past contests, though, we have been able to demonstrate very clearly how well contest entries have evolved once they have been subject to public peer review, and the subsequent tips for improvement - all the while being a great and very interactive and entertaining learning experience for everyone involved. Not to mention the fact that WIP threads are what keep the contest "alive" over its course.

So we keep encouraging it, but not requiring it.

Frank

^^ Yeah, Im pretty intimidated "competing" with you guys.
I'm trying to just look at it as a way to force my self to produce something new, and hopefully high quality.
If I get that, I'll be happy, and if I win something that will be gravy on top.

Good rendering everyone!

@ TheBadger,
You post rarely but all your image are good. Then you test does not have anything to lose, it's just a game the 3D.
(sorry for my bad english)

I finally started working on my entry today. I've been busy and away from terragen lately. All the WIP's look great so far. Seems to be setting the bar high. I'm hoping I have enough time to complete something as detailed as what is out there.

Hello folks!
well I can only echo James at the present, as I am very busy at the moment; but I have been tinkering...(thanks to everybody who has posted any road related clip files etc!!), I have learned alot,  but I have also discovered that I have a lot to do...many many SSS masks etc!
I have several wips going but, none worthy of sharing (just yet!) when I finally decide which path to take (so to speak!) I will post something!
The bar has definitely been raised very high so far... everyones work I have seen is looking awesome!!
see you back here soon!

Hello all.

Reckon I'm a bit late to be starting this one. Will give it a miss, but am really enjoying seeing the other entries come along. Some of these scenes are really shaping up nicely!

Please participate! It's a lot of fun, regardless of how far you come. I think there is still enough time to pull off something great!

I'm a bit disappointed in the number of entries and WIP's being posted (as well as new threads overall, I'm afraid). It's quiet on the forum, I wonder why.... The prizes are super and should pull a lot more people in, trying to win something. There's a lot of help about, so even beginners could be lucky if they struck the right cord.
There's still time, guys!

I suspect it's becuase the quality of what's been posted so far is a bit intimidating to some of us.  :)

Come on guys, do it! When I read that "roadside" is the theme for the actual contest, I was tempted to give up before I even started, because I had no idea how to make a road.

I've been working on bits and pieces in the evening, which I'll post updates in a minute. I've got some time off next week, so will dedicate some of that to finish my submission.

Seeing others great work has certainly pushed up the bar, but for me it's a great opportunity to learn some new stuff, and have a finite date to get it finished by.

I'm a one project at a time guy at home usually, but I've been playing with roads today for the overhanging cliff scene I'm working on.
Made me want to try, but we'll so how the time goes. Got some more work coming in soon.
Plus I'm doing everything on my laptop lately... Graphics card in my PC gave up the ghost. Never thought I'd need my manufacturer's 10 year warranty, but um... I did. ;) So anyway the PC is super quiet compared to the laptop which sounds like it's going to die when I'm rendering on it. So freaking loud. Quick, but loud. I like to render overnight and quiet is good considering I rent a room rather than a flat. I have to sleep next to my renders. ;)
This is also why my cliff thread isn't updated atm.
