Seabuckthorn. The 2 dots in the centre tree are from an opacity map without alpha, while alpha was checked.
looks great!
:)
Ahhh another test to learn something out of it. I really like how you place the veggies. They all seem very natural.
No reflective shader anywhere?
Neato shrub and great sand!
Indeed very natural. Great plants.
Very naturally placed plants! And I like the sand. Nice picture!
Quite convincing. Lots of that type country around here along our lake shores.
Thanks all. Here's another one, especially made for XFrog, so all XFrog groundcover, trees and shrub. Good stuff actually, though I tend to use my own ST veggies.
I might call this 'Pontine Marshes'.
Can only stare at it with my mouth open! :)
A very natural look and a composition I especially like - can't say why but it's impressing me very much.
indeed very very nice. 8)
Thanks, guys. It was very easy actually and only took 1 hour to render. Started out with a basic low terrain, added a warped simple shape to lower some ground, and a plane for the lake, some simple ground colors and displacement, made a distribution shader for min altitude, and some PF's for distribution of plants, and just started importing different sorts of XFrog stuff. One local v3 cloud of 2m thick just above ground for some mist. Soft shadows and a depth pass for the blur (PS). That works very easy; just copy the depth pass into an alpha layer and do lens blur, choosing the alpha layer as its mask. If it's not good enough; CTRL-Z, and adjust the alpha layer, then blur again, still no good, CTRL+Z, and adjust alpha again, repeat blur, etc.
Awesome, Ulco!!! This makes me feel like I'm in the scene. I can almost smell the air.
One thing: I noticed that TG is much faster, when you're using a V2 cloud layer instead of a V3 layer for mist. I don't think the advantages of V3 clouds would show up here.
You're right Hannes, slipped my mind. Well, it was pretty fast anyway. Such a simple setup doesn't need any compute, just a compute normal for some angled veggies, but that's just used for populating, not rendering.
I did the same model myself just a few months ago....
those berries are very nutricious
lose those trees on the hillside and this will pass for ultimate reality!!!
here is my sea Bthorn model...
Nice as always Ulco
Excellent vegetation distribution. Beautifull picture!
I hope you shared this with the person who released the models. Fantastic render!
Wonderful image (as always !). An xfrog only scene? Is this for a promotion? A nice example of the xfrog libraries and a reminder of the excellent assets available there.
Yes, it's something for me being Artist of the Month in April. Stewart was keen to see some specifically XFrog scenes, so that was a good incentive to pull some out again. I didn't do much more than adding some pop variation and plain translucency, but with proper use of good translucency, reflective and bump maps, they would possibly be better still.
I did a test with the -cropoutput started tgd.exe, and rendered 4 slightly overlapping crops. With normal crops the rest of the total image is of course black and the file size of each crop twice as much as with the -cropoutput crops (12MB versus 6MB). The memory use with the normal crops was 12.5 gigs max, with - cropoutput it was 7.4gigs. Rendertime @ 0.6 and AA6, and soft shadows (6 samples) was 1 hour.
I used a GICache for the total, and blended the read within the 4 crop range. In PS I put them in layers and there was no difference in color whatsoever, so even an exact fitting crop would work.
Learned something again, and with a big museum thing coming up (hopefully) this is very valuable to know.
I actually liked that upper right part as it is, so I kept that as well.
I ask again? Are these statue models all the Bardou collection?
https://sketchfab.com/meryon
Absolutely beautiful!!!
Wow, the lights and the atmo is amazing. Superb scene.
QuoteBardou collection?
Yes, they are.
This latest one is really nice indeed. I like the low mist and lighting on the statues.
- Oshyan
Nice images Ulco.
Uh oh. Fantastic, man!
Really nice. about as beautiful as anything I've ever seen created in Terragen
Nice, but I think it needs more mist, especially around those very cool sculptures. Try another one, earlier in the morning and more mist broken up. Also, throw in a few cypress trees. Sculptures like these come from Italy, don't they?
Good idea, Dorian. The statues are French, but well, I love cypresses and old Italian moods, and I was already thinking that the mist is too even and low. I also might add some sort of broad stone stairs on the left towards the building, have to make them.
I had a few cypresses at first, but I didn't like them, and since this is supposed to be XFrog all, I threw them out. I'll toss in one of my own ;)
Finished the cypressversion (made in XFrog), reduced to 70%. Original was at AA8, and ran within 2 hours. Now up to something else....
like this last one, ulco. also like the 2nd to last image so far.
Well done...those cypress' are a lovely tree....and the setting for the sculptures is so real I can almost smell the wildflowers.
It's a bit like I used to paint....
:)
Realcrops with the lighting of Lagoon would be cool.
very nice. Love the mist and the lighting!
I am always amazed at your talent.
Your gifts are many. What a great ability to apply both the artistic and logical assets you have been given.
Your love of nature is very evident as well as your attention to detail. Those fresco murals are amazing also. Do you teach in addition to all that you do? (Aside from all the assistance you freely give here in this forum)
'The Lagoon' = wow
Maestro!
Thanks very much. I was fortunate enough never to have to do teaching ;) Not my forte.
I tried to make stairs (LW) like in the Lagoon yesterday. Would be nice to duplicate that painting in TG. It needs to be such that I can fit a rock outcrop next to it, with some angles, so I'll have another go at it.
Love all of these Ulco, what medium did you paint with?
Exquisite Imagery!
Great paintings, I like how you've kept the egret :)
Beautiful, Ulco!! Fantastic paintings. Definitely something I'd put on my wall.
I've worked in oils mostly. Underpainting and several layers of glazing and opaque medium and lighter patches. The film of paint is very important, adding to the mystery. The white egrets are among my favorite birds, so I keep them in my work, indeed.
Managed some stairs, but it was pretty hard to fit a terrain to it. Probably easier to make a 'terrain object' next to it.
Here's another one of my paintings.
I so wish you could see a copy of The Nature Journal Miriam Anne Bourne, illustrated by Marjorie Stodgell, 1990. The illustrator was a personal family friend, working in second half of 20th century. Two artists in her family, but their works published in America. I am in awe of such talent as theirs and yours.
Beautiful!

didn't someone recently figure out stairs with strata and SS shaders? Would that help at all?

lovely model Ade
Really nice Ulco.
SSS and strata would be an option indeed, but I wanted more 'sophisticated' stairs with a stone railing and some pillars on the railing. Though with some (a lot) of ingenuity that would perhaps even be possible with SSS's. That would be a nice challenge.
Very beautiful final! and the paintings are most impressive!
Thanks, Nils.
I tried to get close to The Lagoon, WIP 1. The light is really hard.
FANTASTIC!!

pure beauty man, you have a lovely touch with oils as well...guess that's where you developed your eye...my problem is I drew underground comix for too long.
Hard call Ulco as both of the last 2 are wonderfully atmospheric...If it was a job I'd make the client choose. Well done x 2
This one (@2500px that is) took a long time, 4 hours, probably due to too high atmo setings, soft shadows and soft reflections. But it was worth it. Some things I need to change.

Really? If I produced something like this I'd be incredibly happy and consider it 'done'. :)
Looks great.
I think this series is great! I like the latest, but as you said you are trying to get close to the Lagoon painting, I wonder if elevating the sun a little would add some light upper right. That one corner upper right has gotten so dark. It is lovely, regardless, but I liked a little more color foreground as in Lagoon. Computers and brushes are quite different, hey? :)
Beautiful thread
8) Promising progress. :)

Gotcha, having seen the most recent one..must have missed the painting you were basing this on...time to review...
having just reviewed the past I concur with luvsmuzik, raising the sun a touch might do it.
Well, it's not that important to mimic the painting, and I kind of like the dark stairs area (conceals the ugly grasses that grow out of that rocky wall ;)). It might also be more natural this way. But I could try. I've now made a hill object (LW then Zbrush) to match the stairs, which is easier to use than reseeding pf's. Perhaps some big ferns would be nice to add.... we'll see.
Very nice renders. Also really enjoyed seeing some of your works in oil. Thanks for the chance to see them.
Liking the last ones Ulco :)
4 hours rendertime...that's not too bad at all.
I hope you will eventually render it all clean and crisp!

Oh we all agree on that! You said something about the lighting being hard, off, whatever.....Being free thinkers, we just speak up in pure admiration for sure.
I made this small hill in Lightwave, fitting the stairs, then worked it out in ZBrush. It's pretty decent. The UV-bumpmap can also be used to plant greenery in the cavities.
One thing that eludes me is why a pop on an object will give rows of plants if you angle the pop at say 30-60º. With vertical area it's normal again.
You are saying your displacement function image is your density mask?....cool!
Nice job on the objects!
Wait, you have ZBrush?
Hmmm, never had that happen Ulco...keep us posted as to a fix in case we do though...
Yep.
Is this related Ulco?

No, I think that has to do with the source object not being centred? You can get these circled pops. But I haven't reread the whole thread.
I changed the front walkway, and added some new ferns. Replaced ivy leaves to get another species. I might do another one as I don't like the very far trees. Two statues are scans by Benjamin Bardou for his intriguing film Gloria Victis: https://benjaminbardou.myportfolio.com/gloria-victis (https://benjaminbardou.myportfolio.com/gloria-victis) I greatly appreciate his generosity in sharing (he knows this).

seems a number of his scans got decimated and used at SketchFab, I recognized a few from the 25 we all got.
He posted your image so I think he is great with it.
Yes, he asked me if that was allright after I mailed him, and I of course said yes. He makes great work, and snoops around here too, though I don't have a clue whether he uses TG at all.
Final of The Lagoon (windingstairs) is now running for 5 hours @3000px wide. Looks good so far (nice and crips ;)). I'm going to make another one like it. There's another painter that I admire too, Arnold Böcklin. I might do something similar to his work...
I did not mean to be demanding, but I know when one takes the time and effort to do something and then shares it with others they are eager to see how that effort is used. Your work was so outstanding I thought you should show it. :)
You're absolutely right.
So here's a few more of my paintings. I think I'll pick one of these (some good, some less) to make in 3D, whilst waiting for the big commissions to get finalized. Practice, practice, practice.....
A person could spend days studying these :) I particularly like the Neptunus last fling, just because I am a "water" person. I can see this one with all the TG cloud effects on the waves. In the old days we had to simulate a splash with a masked jpg...my how things have changed!
Wonderful images!
That last one is Alma-Tadema-esqe. All nice though.
'Morning at Cypress Lake' is my favorite. You're a very talented painter that's for certain, ever thought of going back to traditional media?
I wonder if they will come into their own by recreating them in 3D. :)
Thanks. I'm a bit fed up with painting, so I'm not going back (not soon anyway). And they won't be the same at all in 3D, but at least I won't get headaches from the oils :P In oils, I used to add vague patches and layers for more mysterious areas, and that's hardly possible in 3D; everything is there in crisp detail, and the light and composition should do the work.
I just love your oil paintings. Stunning artwork!
Amazing talent and diversification of styles
Thank you for sharing some of your archives Ulco. I can appreciate you moving on from oil to digital media; your artistic temperment has changed as well (to my mind at least) from suggestions of the surreal, to a more illustrative focus. Perhaps that's why I have enjoyed your 'recreation' in these last images of some prior themes so much. Beautiful work.
Thanks again, guys. I really need to do more 'ART' than illustration-like work, and this might be the way. Get some of my ideas across in a digital way.
As you may have noticed in the painting 'poet's guest', there's two worlds. A good number of my paintings were about that; past, present and future, and the wall with the mural of a different world was to emphasize that unpassable border between now, then and time to come. The guy is staring at those stairs like he wants to go back, but he can't....

Seeing that name, I just had to check that out too. We had an Alma a ways back in the family. Then exploring the works, I see a favorite flower was Oleander, which was also a family name. I am now convinced all of my ancient relatives were witches or something. :) Few of them graduated from grammar school, so it must have been those penny postcards sold back in the day.

The only Alma I know is a Filipino woman.
Ours performed in the circus with the parents of Harry James and little Harry :)

This is very cool. That sky is fantastic!!
Thanks. Original took 8 hours (0.7,AA7), due to V3 cloud and soft shadows and smooth reflections, and perhaps also because the mist extended under water half a meter. I should have avoided that.
Some explanatory notes for those interested: island mask painted in PS 16-bit, raised 20m, added big fake stones after a compute normal and XYZ, then some inward displacement by PF, and some more fake stones with max altitude. Wall and stairs and building made yesterday in LW. Water lilies procedural, masked by some paintted shader patches. My (shared) grass and 1 type of shrub, and the Italian cypress. Hole in cloud for 'spotlight' on island burned in clouds by circular image mask and camera poiting at the sun.
Statue from Benjamin Bardou's scan.
Impressive!
And a big compliment for your paintings!
Whew, pretty great massive-ness....a great romantic/surreal scene.once again totally awesome..almost Maxfield Parrish on drugs..like a lot....
That is wonderful Ulco! A deep piece with many possible meanings for the viewer to explore. Your technical mastery of TG at this point allows this kind of artistic statement. Poetic and mysterious, bravo!
;D 8)
Beautifull, who comes from a dream !!!
Procedural lily pads! What a mind, thanks for the explanations! I really like the clouds in full size render!
I am assuming you made the funky little base for your statues? Nice!
Wait! This is a TG render? No way!!! Looks like a painting to me. This just blows me away...
..
...
....
Ok, I picked myself up off the floor...
The rocks, the sky, the matching structures, the water, the mist... That's just too much. Instantly my #1 render and I will need to print this out and put up here on the wall to just stare at :)
BTW, the thread title cracks me up. "Another set of mindblowing Dune renders put together in a spare moment.." LOL!
Is this the "Island of Dr. Moreau" ?
Great reender, very atmospheric ...
Thanks a lot. It's not really that artistic, as it's loosely based on this painting, which I greatly admire (watch it closely in hires, while listening to The End by the Doors....). But I was thinking of doing some series of more painterly stuff and perhaps offer them as prints. That's why I don't post full size (sorry).

Well put me on the list of folks desiring said prints...I'll sell a guitar to get a set....if need be
I printed it out, but it does not do the render justice. So I set it up as a desktop background. Needs to be a bit higher res to fill my whole screen. I would encourage your offering a paid print/high res option. Can't get enough of it.
