For the first one, use the Twist and Shear shader.  As for the second, transparency isn't currently implemented as far as I know because of some remaining bugs with it.  Thus, you can't do the second image at this time.

The Default Shader supports transluency. But I think it doesn't really work yet.

The subsurface scattering seen in the 2nd image is not yet available.
