How to render the clouds as seen in (Aliens) Prometheus?

After seeing the movie Prometheus the new film in the Alien franchise by acclaimed director Ridley Scott I would like to render some Anvil head clouds like are seen in the opening scene of the movie. Does anyone know what settings are necessary to achieve that scale to the clouds as well as that formation? I am looking to create the smooth topped anvil head clouds as well as the smaller cumulous (billowy) type in the same scene. Here are a few pics to give you an ideal incase you have not seen the movie.

Nice project , but please do not forget that they used more then one approach to made these pictures :
